Due to limited use, the ability to check mail from external mail providers will be removed from Webmail on February 4th 2016. Prior to this change, an alert will be shown to Webmail users who have the feature enabled. We recommend that users take advantage of forwarding if they would like all of their mail delivered to one inbox.

To continue receiving mail at Thexyz from services like Gmail and Outlook.com you can check these guides below:

.PRO – the premium namespace for professionals, is no longer restricted to certain groups and burdened with a ton of verification work.

Now everyone with a professional cause can have their domain registered quickly and easily.

Why was .PRO restricted?

When the .PRO TLD was launched 13 years ago by RegistryPro, it was intended to represent certified professionals only.

The registration itself was tied to a long verification procedure where registrants were required to legitimate their occupancy by showing compliance with a long list of eligibility criteria, including professional status, government certification and good standing.

The presented registration information was then verified by the registry. This was a time-consuming process that caused registrants inconvenience.

Who can now register .PRO domains?

Thanks to the newly loosened registry regulations, .PRO domains are now open for registration to practically everyone.

Regardless of their certificates, all registrants can apply for a .PRO domain name.

The procedure is short and quick, with no credentials to submit and no extra verification steps to go through.

Registrants can reserve .PRO domains for a period of 1-10 years and can make modifications to the Whois information, whenever needed. Click here to check availability of a .PRO domain.

As per the registry’s official rule, .PRO domain names cannot be transferred between registrars and do not support a Whois protection service.

The password strength requirements for Hosted Email and Hosted Exchange are changing. On January 6, 2016, the Control Panel and Webmail interfaces will begin enforcing new rules when setting or changing a password.

The password rules will now be consistent for both Hosted Email and Hosted Exchange. The new password strength requirements are:
  • Must be at least 8 characters long
  • Must contain 3 of the following:
  • Uppercase letter
  • Lowercase letter
  • Number
  • Special character or space
On January 20, 2016, all Email API's will be updated to validate new or changed end user passwords according to the new rules. If you use the Administrative APIs, this change may require you to update your integration code. Also, if you use the Directory Sync utility, you may need to adjust your password policy.

After January 20th, when attempting to set a password that doesn't match these new requirements, an error response will be triggered from the API. You can - and should - update your code to respect the new requirements now. Please refer to the REST or SOAP documentation for error code specifics.

This change will not force any existing users to change their password, regardless of the strength of that password. For that reason, we recommend periodically changing email passwords.

If you have any additional questions, please contact your support team.

Earlier this year we faced a severe DDOS attack against our IP address that caused issues for some users accessing some of our domains. Mail service remained unaffected and webmail was also accessible through an alternate url, if the usual webmail site was unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience and disruption following this unfortunate ‎incident. We have conducted a complete root cause analysis to find out what when wrong and how we can better deal with future attacks.

DNS Architecture

Our DNS servers are spread out over 16 IPs, in 4 data centers. Each server is isolated at both network level and physically, equipped with bandwidth capacity, network gear etc.

Client domains using our dns

Every domain name registered through Thexyz, a free managed dns hosting service is offered. Each domain is split into 4 name servers and the graphic below illustrates this.

‎Yourdomain.com is registered with us and gets 4 Name servers:

ns1.thexyz.com , ns2.thexyz.com, ns3.thexyz.com and ns4.thexyz.com.

Each name server has 4 dedicated IP addresses and in total, we serve our DNS traffic through 4 data centers, each with 2 physical servers which gives us a capacity of 16 GBps network throughput.

On each of these DNS servers we run a optimized version of PowerDNS with a capacity of 50000 qps. The total theoretical capacity of our DNS cluster is around 400,000 qps.

DDoS Mitigation Capacity

As mentioned before, our DNS servers are hosted at SteadFast and SteadFast\'s network has been battle tested many times before during similar DDOS attacks. Each of the Data centers are equipped with multiple 10Gbps or 40 gbps transit links to the network. The data center also uses Arbor Peakflow for DDOS detection and Arbor TMS for DDOS mitigation. Each of the Arbor TMS systems are capable of mitigating 10+ gbps of attack traffic.

‎What went wrong?

Usually when we see a DNS Server IP address getting attacked and they usually get null routed, it is often only attacking just a few of the 16 IP\'s. This activity is pretty common and we see two or three such incidents every week. We have always maintained our service levels during all such incidents.

At its peak during the recent attack, we received 40+ gbps traffic spread out across all our 16 DNS server IP Addresses. The attack traffic was moving from one IP Address to the other at rapid succession. To prevent instability on the data center, they null routed our IP Addresses. The null route is a rule to drop all traffic destined to our IP address at the data center’s upstream internet service provider.

‎The problem with our setup

Issue 1: Relying solely on data center for DDOS mitigation capabilities.
Issue 2: We are bound to /32 static IP addresses. We are not utilizing our own /24 subnets to host the DNS servers. By using our own /24 subnets, we could have swung the traffic to our third party DDOS mitigation partner, Neustar.
Issue 3: All customer name servers point to the same IP addresses. So when attack happens and causes disruption for all customers using our DNS servers.

To solve these problems, we have planned a new DNS architecture and deployed this for use on our DNS services.

The new DNS architecture

Our new managed DNS infrastructure architecture is explained below:
We have moved the current DNS server IP Addresses to our own IP Subnets. This ensures we have the ability to use Neustar for DDOS mitigation when needed. All our data centers are already protected by Neustar. We will also start bucketing customers across different IP addresses so that an attack on a domain in one set, will not disrupt DNS service to customers in other sets.

We will start introducing local DNS services in other geographical regions where we have a data center presence and use Anycast. With Anycast, an attack originating from a particular region will only affect that region, while other regions remain unaffected. The affected region will use Neustar DDOS mitigation to mitigate the attack‎.

We sincerely regret and apologize for the inconvenience caused. We understand that you rely on us and to that effect, we’ll continue to render our services to the best of our ability to serve your business with utmost reliability.

We have released a new feature in Webmail to enhance privacy for Webmail users. When a user receives an email with links to externally hosted images, those images will not be displayed immediately. Instead, a bar will show up at the top of the email to indicate that images are being blocked. The user can click "Show Images" or "Always show images for this sender" to display the images.

This is important because users may not realize that even if they delete an email without responding, they may still be sending information to third parties. Some messages contain links to images hosted on a separate server from their email. To display one of these images, their email client makes a request to the image server. This request includes their IP address, browser version, and any cookies the image server has set. Taken together, the server can use this information to track their online behavior. This is common practice, but we think users should have a choice about who can collect their information. That's why we've implemented protection against external image tracking in Webmail.

Can I turn this feature on or off?

Yes. By default the feature is turned on but you can turn it off by following these directions:
  1. In the Settings dialog box, click General Settings.
  2. On the Email Options tab, clear the Block external images check box.
  3. Click Save.

We have received a number of complaints from customers about a phishing email, which pretends to be sent by our registrar – Thexyz., by eNom, by LiquidNet Ltd or by Public Domain Registry.

Global phishing attacks are common nowadays. However, this particular one goes one step further, stirring confusion by including a specific domain name that is owned by the given recipient, rather than some random content.

The accurate domain owner information, coupled with the sense of urgency created by the phishers themselves, have caught many users off guard and have prompted them to click on links, which lead to virus-infected websites.

Fortunately, many of the hosts of the phishing sites have been notified and the harmful pages have been suspended. However, this does not exclude the possibility that other infected pages may still be circulating around. Here is an example of the email that has been circulating around.

What should you do when you receive an email like this?

DO NOT CLICK ON ANY OF THE LINKS IN THE EMAIL!

A quick way to verify if the email sender in the header is authentic is to always hover over the link itself to see where it’s going.

Here is an example of how a phishing email’s Return-Path header would look like:

Return-Path:
Received: from stu.xjtu.edu.cn
X-EQAUTHUSER: zhhliu@stu.xjtu.edu.cn

Mobile phone users can press and hold the link to see the full URL.

If you are still in doubt, forward any emails you are unsure of to support@thexyz.com and we will reply back shortly.

Mailbox rename

The latest feature to be added to Thexyz Webmail was requested via our product feedback forums and is now available for all users.

Mailbox rename will allow email administrators to rename a mailbox and retain all data. In the past the only way to achieve this was through an email migration

To rename a ma‎ilbox you can login to the email administrators control panel or submit a ticket with your request.

Use case examples:

  • An employee has recently married and there is a name change
  • An employee is being replaced by a new person
  • General username change

Other Notes:

  • The user must update their username in their email clients and mobile devices to maintain access to the account.
  • Rename does not support SharePoint, any associated SharePoint user will not be renamed.
  • Chat buddy lists are not automatically updated during a rename. Users will need to re-add buddies.
  • Shared calendars will not automatically update. Users viewing the calendar of a mailbox that is renamed will need to re-add the new calendar share.

The market is flooded with plenty of domain names and as .COM becomes less available, it’s a good idea to stay at the .TOP to be always remembered. We’re thrilled to announce the launch of .TOP at a fantastic price of just $3.95, valid till 31st August, 2015!

Why .TOP?

Regardless of the scale and the nature of the business, .TOP is where everyone wants to be!
  • Generic – It needs no interpretation and can be registered by anyone, it’s flexible and memorable
  • Stands out - Your business needs a short and crisp TLD name that helps you cut through the clutter and makes you stand out. That’s exactly what .TOP has to offer to you
  • Top means the best – TOP is synonymous with the best, it offers high credibility and trust of quality
Because .TOP is generic, it‘s suitable for everyone. Big brands like Apple, Baidu, Chanel, Chrome, Flickr, Gmail, Google, Kindle and Yahoo have chosen .TOP.

We have made a few changes to the life cycle of the .EU domains on our systems following a change made by the registry. EU domains will now follow a life cycle similar to that of gTLDs.

For domains registered before September 15th, 2014, the domains will expire on the 2nd last day of the expiring month and will then go through a 25 day renewal grace period. On non renewal during this period, the domain will be deleted and the customer will have to restore it within 40 days. For domains registered after September 15, 2014, the domains will expire on the same day as the registration date in the expiring month and then go through a 25 day renewal grace period. On non renewal, the domain will be deleted and would need to be restored within 40 days.
In simpler terms, post 3rd August, the expiry date that is shown on OB is the date the domain will expire on.

If the domain is renewed anytime before the domain goes into quarantine, the expiry date will be extended by 1 year. If the domain is renewed/reactivated after it goes into quarantine, the expiry date will be extended by 2 years.

We have been receiving complaints from WordPress users about problems with Chrome Beta v44. Symptoms include redirecting WordPress sites (including sites that do not have an SSL installed) to https://, regardless of their settings.

This was probably intended as a security improvement, to suggest HTTPs to the server wherever possible. Unluckily, it's breaking WordPress and other web server installations all over the web.

When the user’s browser is rolled back to previous version 43 – the issue is no longer present.

The Chrome developers are aware of the issue and have already pushed an update.

However, until a patch is rolled out, a large amount of WordPress sites will appear to be insecure in Chrome. Chances are good that they will push out a bug fix earlier because of the growing number of complaints.

For now, if you experience the same issue, just uninstall the beta version and reinstall the stable one. Here you can follow the ongoing case: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=505268

You will now be able to take advantage of the advanced features of a reliable e-commerce platform, which is trusted by more than 240,000 merchants around the world.

What is Magento?

Magento started out back in 2007 as a small project run by a private US company based in California. In 2010, eBay bought 49% of the company’s shares and as of June 2011, Magento is 100% owned by the biggest online retailer. According to a research made in October 2014, Magento’s market share among the 30 most popular e-commerce platforms, including osCommerce, is 30%.

Why choose Magento for your e-store?

Magento was built for e-commerce websites and comes with all the features and specifications that you may need in order to put up a professional e-store. It is highly scalable and will grow with your business regardless of what e-commerce features or enhancements you need.

As far as page speed is concerned, Magento is a winner thanks to the fact that it uses high-end caching methods such as Varnish, as well as other DB optimization techniques.

As an open-source solution, Magento is supported by an ever-growing user community, which is dedicated to assisting you with your e-commerce store. You can post questions and browse the

Magento employs the MySQL relational database management system (RDBMS), the PHP programming language and elements of the Zend Framework. It combines the conventions of the object-oriented programming paradigm and the model-view-controller architecture. Also, the entity–attribute–value model is used for data storage purposes.

Magento comes with a basic e-commerce theme, which can easily be customized by editing the PHP, HTML and CSS. If you want, you can easily install a custom theme via FTP or SSH without losing your content or the layout of the pages themselves.

The basic built-in functionality can easily be extended using any of the plugins developed by the supportive Magento community. Also, integrating Magento with various third-party payment gateways, database applications, shipment tracking apps, etc. is quick and easy.

Where can I find Magento?

Magento is freely available for installation from the Thexyz Web Applications Installer section of the Control Panel.

Just go to Installer -> Applications Installer and navigate to the E-commerce section. You will find Magento as the first script on the list:

For companies yet to make the move to cloud hosting for data services, next week marks an important date as a common version of Microsoft Server 2003 reaches end of life.

On July 14th 2015, Microsoft will end support for Microsoft Server 2003. This will leave thousands of businesses exposed to security threats as the software becomes obsolete. Any Windows Server 2003 machines you have running in your office, they will continue to operate and you can learn more here.

Windows 2003 servers won’t suddenly stop working as soon as support expires. They will keep running and your users will still have access the resources they require. However, there are several issues to be aware of. - See more at: http://www.quartetservice.com/windowsserver2003-endoflife/?gclid=CjwKEAjwlPOsBRCWq5_e973PzTgSJACMiEp2YQyLwM8h5zpLJeke7XzSnX8jumUSlc-_N0lUkI3j4xoC4unw_wcB#sthash.1snvMqgL.dpuf

What options do I have if I'm still running 2003 in-house?
Your IT technician c‎an upgrade you to a more recent version or you can use this as a chance to take advantage of a cloud based exchange service like Thexyz.

What are the advantages to moving my Exchange server to the cloud?
A major advantage is cost, businesses that move to the cloud usually save 4 times as much than when using an in-house server. There is also the advantage of not having to worry about the regular security updates that need to be applied.

What about my existing emails? Will they be lost?
We will perform a full remote email migration that will migrate all existing email, contacts, calendars and tasks from your current Exchange server, to a new 2013 server that is remotely hosted.

Will there be any downtime during the migration?
No, we handle email migrations on a daily basis and have developed a process to ensure all mail is migrated and there is no downtime with email service.

Why should I choose Thexyz for Exchange hosting?
Thexyz has been hosting Exchange email for nearly 10 years and have since made email, our main service offering. With Thexyz you can enjoy. 100% network uptime, 100GB of email storage and send 50MB attachments. ‎

What is the cost for an email migration?
Email migrations are charged at $9.95 per mailbox and can be ordered here. You will also need to get your destination mailboxes setup with Thexyz here.

How long does the email migration process take?
Typically, most accounts are fully migrated within a couple of hours. This can take longer for larger mailboxes. It is rare for a migration to last longer than 24 hours and mailboxes are fully operational during migration process. We can also migrate multiple accounts simultaneously via an excel spreadsheet.

How can I move to hosted exchange and keep my costs to a minimum?
By using exchange with our webmail, you can mix and match a combination of exchange accounts with standard IMAP on the same domain. The advantage here is cost, why pay $14.95 for an exchange mailbox when you only need a particular mailbox to have email access? This way you can purchase our premium email accounts for $1.95 per box instead.

When you examine the speed of website, you can see that some off the more resource heavy ‎areas are often images. If left uncompressed, image data can get out of hand. ‎ With new web master guidelines from Google stating that page loading speed is now a ranking factor.

Compressing images not only reduces load on your server, it also can a effect your page load speed and in turn, your search engine rankings.

To demonstrate how image compression can reduce page load time we decided to do a test ourselves. ‎ For this test we will use several types of uncompressed images on a test website. We will then put the website through a page speed test. Both before and after of course.

We tested several different image compression tools for both png and jpeg images. We found FileOptimizer to be the all around best choice.

Below you can see the results.

  • Number of images: 144
  • Size before compression: 13.4MB
  • Size after compression: 9.59MB

Image quality

Image compression does not necessarily mean that the‎ quality of the image will be reduced. Many raw images are too detailed for use on the web and come with unnecessary meta data that can be removed and therefore reduce the size of the image.

Compressing images not only reduces load on your server, it also can a effect your page load speed and in turn, your search engine rankings.

Here at Thexyz, we’re always looking out for ways to better your online experience with us on the service and security front. Today, we’d like to draw your attention to new security vulnerabilities identified in several popular scripts - WordPress & Magneto. Please note that these issues are script-based and are not specific to the Thexyz platform in any way.

WordPress Vulnerability

This is a new, serious vulnerability, announced recently which has the potential to cause some damage and disruption. Current versions of WordPress are vulnerable to a stored XSS. An unauthenticated attacker can inject JavaScript in WordPress comments. The script is triggered when the comment is viewed.

Impact:

If triggered by a logged-in administrator, under default settings the attacker can leverage the vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the server via the plugin and theme editors.

Alternatively the attacker could change the administrator’s password, create new administrator accounts, or do whatever else the currently logged-in administrator can do on the target system. You can find more details about the impact and solution for the same by clicking here.

Steps you need to take:

We would request you to go through the recommendations and update your Wordpress software, plugins and themes.

Magento Vulnerability

This is a vulnerability that has been recently reported too. The vulnerability is actually comprised of a chain of several vulnerabilities that ultimately allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute PHP code on the web server.

Impact:

The attacker can bypass all security mechanisms and gains control of the store and its complete database, allowing credit card theft or any other administrative access into the system. This attack is not limited to any particular plugin or theme. All the vulnerabilities are present in the Magento core, and affects any default installation of both Community and Enterprise Editions.

Steps you need to take:

If you are using the mentioned vulnerable versions of Magento, we would request you to patch it using the updates provided here.

You can test whether your Magento website is vulnerability or not, using this tool.

We strongly recommend you access all your packages and patch them immediately to avoid any issues. In case you require any information regarding this email, please feel free to get in touch with us here.

To connect a Twitter of Facebook account, you need to first login to that account and then make your way to the Forum. You then click the social icon, the example shown is for Twitter, so it may ask you to login again to authorize the app.

Once authorized, you will be able to automatically login in future when signed in to the social account.

Contacts are valuable, and without a pro-active backup plan, as many of us know, they can be all instantly lost.

There are many services and apps available today offering to backup your contacts from you‎r mobile device. It is a good idea to go with one you trust and can test.

You may also notice that when you add a service like Facebook or Instagram to your phone, it may without your knowledge start to sync your contacts from the social media account to your phone. This can be a big problem because some users may have their contacts syncing with multiple services. This can create duplicates to your contacts and lead to data loss in a restore.

The best practice to backing up your contacts is to have them sync with one source. The source of the sync should be an account you use for communication, such as email. For this we recommend Thexyz MobileSync which will by default sync your contacts from any mobile device, to webmail and to Outlook.

Before performing a test of the backup, it is important to first ensure your contacts are backed up. If you do currently have your contacts backed up to another location, you will need to first import them to webmail so they start syncing. If you already have your contacts on a service like Google or Outlook you can easily export them as a csv file and import into webmail. The contacts will then start to sync with your device and email account.

If your contacts are only saved on the sim card of your device or the local storage of the device, you will need to download a third party app to export contacts to a csv file. We compiled a list of third party apps that allow this over here.

Helping entrepreneurs and businesses around the world is of paramount importance here at Thexyz. Typically we do this through providing excellent email and apps services through Thexyz cloud.

We admire the entrepreneurial spirit which is why we have launched the Global Giving Initiative to fund small business owners who have a passion to better their lives and communities. We are working with Kiva.org to reach entrepreneurs all over the world. Kiva is the world’s first and largest microlending nonprofit aimed at connecting impoverished entrepreneurs to the funds they need to start and grow their business.

So far our team has funded loans to entrepreneurs in 4 countries; and committed $15,000 to the initiative for 2015.

What inspired us to start this campaign was how such a small loan from of $50 or $100 can essentially double someones salary. We originally heard a story of a man who wanted a bicycle to help transport goods to market. By using a bike the man can carry twice as much goods to market each day and has doubled his income for his family. It is stories such as this that inspired us to get involved. This video below also is a good example of Kiva lending.

Visit our Global Giving page to learn more about the entrepreneurs we are funding and how you can get involved.

    Google Backup

Over the last year, we have improved the backup capabilities of our cloud hosting platform by enabling the option to back up your data to Dropbox and CodeGuard

Now we have added the option to have your data backed up online by Google Drive. This option is meant to help Google users integrate their sites with their Google account and thus keep all important data in one place.

How will the Google Drive backup option work for you?

Just like with the Dropbox backup option, which has been extensively used throughout the last year, you will be able to back up your entire site content using your Google Drive accounts. This includes files (text files, images, videos, etc.) and databases (MySQL and PostgreSQL).

NOTE: The Google Drive and the Dropbox backup options will be available on an either-or basis per host, i.e. you can select to back up your data for a certain host using either Dropbox or Google Drive.

How to back up your sites using Google Drive?

In the Web Hosting Control Panel, go to Files and then click on the Remote Backups option:

Then click on the Add Google Drive Account button in the top right corner:

Our Hepsia Backup Application will ask you for permission. Click on the Accept button to go ahead:

Now your hosting account and your Google Drive profile are connected. You’ll also get an email notification from Google to confirm that. You can back up 3 types of data, which are divided into columns, including hostnames (this means the entire content on your sites apart from your databases), MySQL databases and PgSQL databases:

Now select the host that you want to make a backup for and then select the Google account that you want to use from the Connected Accounts dropdown menu:

After that, you’ll need to select the period within which the backup will be generated. You can choose between 3 and 14 backups. Our backup script will run every other day, generating a full backup of your files:

For instance, if you choose 3 backups, the script will create 3 full backups from the last 6 days (a backup every other day). The moment you select the backup period, the backup process will be started. In the root folder of your Google Drive account, you can see the HepsiaBackups folder that has just been created under the Apps folder:

When the hostname backup generation process starts, you’ll see the backups organized in folders (every backup from a given day will be placed in a separate folder).

If you want to make a backup of your MySQL or PgSQL databases as well, you will need to go through the same procedure:

NOTE: We will make automatic backups of your websites and databases on our servers, no matter if you use our Google Drive/Dropbox backup service or not.
